In a small beauty parlor in northwestern Louisiana, life is anything but boring! Steel Magnolias follows six women through three years as they face life’s challenges together and find comfort in one another. Embracing both laughter and tears, this story celebrates the power of female friendship.
In the 1980s, Steel Magnolias, the blockbuster was nominated for an Academy Award and two Golden Globes with an all-star cast including Dolly Parton, Sally Field, and Julia Roberts.
It was based on a stage play written by Robert Harling, inspired by his personal experience with his sister's journey with diabetes. The LATTE Theater show is Directed by Felicia Pfluger, who took the cast through the show's dramaturgy, set in Truvy's beauty shop in Chinquapin Parish, where everybody gets their "do" done.
"We journey with each iconic character through life's challenges. Some of tragedy, some of healing", LATTE Director Felicia Pfluger explains. "This story focuses on the importance of love and friendship and the resiliency of laughter through tears. The real love these women share is powerful and tangible. Friendship is the palatable glue that holds their lives together."
Callie Devine (Westmont) will portray Shelby, the feisty, "prettiest girl in town," whose character is based on Harling's own fiery and sweet sister. Mia Tapson (La Grange) is a powerhouse that rounds out the cast as Shelby's mother, M'Lynn. Together, the characters weave a story about raucous, sincere friendship, exemplifying what it means to be a steel magnolia: a delicate southern belle, yet stronger than steel.
"Steel Magnolias takes strong talent, and when you pair that with these types of roles, and you can create a magical stage experience. This talented teen cast does not disappoint." Pfluger shares.
"The characters share so deeply, it is important to give meaning to those emotions so we can feel where the play is going and growing to, " Evelyn (Annelle) shares, "I hope the audience will dig into the show and really feel the meaning! It's such an emotional rollercoaster."
Aiden (Clairee) agrees, "People who enjoy heartfelt stories and aren’t afraid to shed a tear in the theater will love this. Those familiar with the show will still discover new things about these beloved characters. Those unfamiliar with the show will discover a new favorite!"
Lucie (Ouisser) shares, "As a friend, I look up to all my cast mates, all of them are such amazing, talented, and sweet people, just like the characters we play."
