NCIS: Hawai'i finally gave Jesse Boone some much-needed character development, and it did so by giving him a Tony DiNozzo moment.
In the NCIS franchise, the team leaders typically get most of the attention. Everyone wanted to know what Gibbs was up to. Likewise, Jane Tennant usually steals the show on NCIS: Hawai'i. But the NCIS spinoff has started to zoom in on some other characters. Recently, "Money Honey" focused on Alex Tennant, as it corrected an NCIS mistake. Now, "Bread Crumbs" gave Jesse Boone his moment in the spotlight.
Jesse is Tennant's second in command, and he does his job well. But Jesse's character was ready for the next step, and that's what he got in "Bread Crumbs." When Tennant went missing (and could have been dead), Jesse stepped up to the plate and admirably filled in as team leader. Here's what happened and how Jesse's actions put him on the same level as Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo."Bread Crumbs" revolved around a prisoner transport. The US Marshals were rushing the suspect back to the mainland, but Tennant insisted on questioning him. An NCIS agent had been murdered in Seattle, and Tennant knew that the suspect was responsible. So, she agreed to talk to him during a helicopter ride. It was all going well until the suspect faked a medical emergency, crashed the helicopter and made his escape. With the helicopter down, the NCIS team went to work to find one of their own.
However, with the boss out of the picture, Jesse was thrust into a leadership position. From inside the team's war room, he liaisoned with his team, Whistler's FBI reinforcements and local law enforcement. It was a stressful job because he didn't know what they would find, but he was able to compartmentalize and be a successful leader. Commander Chase (the team's medical examiner) specifically complimented Jesse's skills -- even when his emotions were all over the place. Luckily, Jesse's efforts were rewarded, and Tennant returned home safely.
