From ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to ‘John Wick 4’: a resurgence of action movies?

Tom Cruise did everything he could to Top Gun: Maverick was released in theaters. The actor insisted, in a context of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that this film had to be seen on the big screen. It had been made for that format and should be enjoyed in that format. The result? One of the most important productions of 2022; the same thing that could happen with John Wick 4 in 2023.

Those stories that had attracted the attention of an audience oriented only to entertainment, though perhaps not to complex narratives, no longer generated as much interest as before. In this context, phenomena such as Top Gun: Maverick y John Wick 4 to put a question on the table: is action cinema back?

Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe offer action films, they do not respond to the same style of other iconic pieces such as. Matrix. Their pace, focus and purpose are different. Particularly if we pay attention to a key detail: most of the productions of these franchises are part of a whole in which they are related to each other.

An important issue in that it influences the story being told. Following the example of Matrixthere is a crucial difference between proposing a trilogy and aspiring to the construction of a whole story in which each protagonist could have a saga of productions that will have to dialogue with many others.
