Call the Midwife season 13 cast, plot, trailer and everything you need to know

When will the nurses of Nonnatus be back?Call the Midwife's Humpty-Dumpty, fairytale-style wedding saw Trixie get hitched to Matthew in a ceremony littered with calamity. Still it was the dream wedding of sorts and the perfect way to cap the season with a street party that brought the two back to the heart of Poplar (aka Nonnatus House) to cut their cake.

Sounds ideal right? However there were still plenty of loose strings and burning questions left unanswered that have left fans dying to know when the next season will be on screens. Here's what we know about Call the Midwife season 13.

Call the Midwife season 13 potential release date: When's it on?

Thankfully it's not a case of if the show is coming back but when, as Call the Midwife has been renewed until 2026.That means more babies, more drama and more complex social issues for fans to sink their teeth into. The show's creator Heidi Thomas all but promised more emotional stories are on their way while adding: "We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I'm thrilled that we're all heading into the 1970s together."

The show's executive producer, Dame Pippa Harris, chimed in: "[The renewal is a] tremendous achievement and it's a testament to the passion and dedication of our cast and crew, of whom I'm very proud. There's no news just yet on when season 13 will air but it has been confirmed that season 14 and 15 will follow the same format as the previous seasons with an eight-episode run of 60 minutes each. We assume season 13 will be no different.Despite the tight lips concerning the release date it's likely the show will follow its usual pattern, which means a 2023 Christmas episode followed by a new season release in January 2024.

Call the Midwife season 13 cast: Who will be coming back?

A few fates were up in the air close to the end of season 12. Many fans speculated that Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew would settle comfortably into married life and not return.

It turns out that they weren't the only ones who were worried. Despite her popularity, George has admitted to being genuinely fearful about Trixie being written out.In an interview with Radio Times when discussing her future on the show the actress disclosed: "You never have complete control. Absolutely, it's a genuine fear. You never know and they might just come to a point where they think, 'Do you know what, we've got nothing more to say about your character. There's nothing left to do with you. So you're off.' It happens."

A frightful thought indeed, thankfully there's no chance of that. At least not anytime soon.Olly Rix, the actor behind Matthew, told the Irish Mirror: "Their focus is on changing things around them. It doesn't seem to be remotely in their characters to just hang that all up now and enjoy the quiet life. That's not who they are. There's no sense that he's wanting to extricate himself or her from that.He added: "His money is something that facilitates that but, money or not, that's where his heart is."
