The Wickverse is expanding with de Armas becoming The Ballerina.
John Wick spin-off The Ballerina--starring Ana de Armas--is reportedly planned for a June 2024 release (via Deadline). The latest John Wick movie has made a killing at the box office raking in a global box office of $250M. That takes the franchise to a worldwide gross of $833M over four films.
De Armas, coming off her Oscar nomination for Netflix's Blonde, is no stranger to action movies, having already starred in No Time To Die alongside Daniel Craig in his final outing as James Bond. The actress will play an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma like Reeves' Wick. Ian McShane is looking to return as hotel owner Winson as well as Anjelica Huston reprising her character The Director from John Wick 3. Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus have been cast in unspecified roles.
Rumors were speculated with John Wick 4 that Ana's character, Rooney, appeared during the scene of Bill Skarsgard's Marqui watching a lone ballet performance with a single star on stage. Rooney was briefly seen in John Wick 3, albeit played by a different actor and without any lines.
The Ballerina will be directed by Underworld writer Len Wiseman, with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) helming the script. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski are producing.
This is just one of Wickverse planned spin-offs that include a television mini-series focused on a young Winston TV about the early years of The Continental.
