Kelli Giddish’s Amanda Rollins has moved on to her next chapter, but Law & Order: SVU may have already found her Special Victims Unit replacement.
The Special Victims Unit has felt discordant since Detective Rollins retired from the team, but Law & Order: SVU appears to have her replacement in mind already. Fans of Law & Order: SVU were left shocked when news of Kelli Giddish's exit from the Law & Order franchise broke; chief executives of the series instructed writers to reduce the size of her role at the top of season 24 in a decision that upset leading actress and producer herself, Mariska Hargitay. In season 24, episode 19, "And a Trauma in a Pear Tree," Detective Amanda Rollins said her final goodbyes to the Special Victims Unit to seek a new chapter in life, teaching.
Kelli Giddish's Law & Order: SVU exit not only upset fans, cast, and crew alike, but the void she left unfortunately upset the balance of the SVU team. Regular viewers of Law & Order: SVU have long become accustomed to tenured members occupying the Special Victims Unit, save the rotation of fleeting additions to the team from season to season, and the precinct hasn't felt the same since having lost a well-established detective. However, Law & Order: SVU seems to want to address the disparity in light of Detective Rollins' exit by filling her place with one of the junior detectives that have been frequenting the show as of late.
Law & Order: SVU has introduced three young detectives before Captain Benson — Detectives Velasco (Octavio Pisano), Muncy (Molly Burnett), and Churlish (Jasmine Batchelor). Any of them would have large shoes to fill following Detective Rollins, and the remainder of season 24 looks to be an examination of how well the Captain (Mariska Hargitay) and observing audiences respond to the detectives. While it may be too soon to tell which detective is most liked, Law & Order: SVU has been teasing there will be a good deal more of Detective Gracy Muncy to come.
A recent post from actress Molly Burnett's Twitter page suggests that Muncy's storyline will get a lot more complex. Law & Order: SVU is known for curating elaborate character arcs for main cast members, and Burnett's tweet implies the series will approach familial relations within Muncy's personal life. For those who favor Grace Muncy, this could be good news. The more Law & Order: SVU focuses on expanding her character's complexities, the better chance Muncy has in maintaining longevity within the series.
