Top Gun: Maverick saved a sinking ship due to the pandemic; Hollywood, even film veterans like Steven Spielberg can testify to it. Tom Cruise stars carried the film on his shoulders with a career-defining performance, it was also Cruise’s comeback into the industry. Unfortunately, even after a Box-Office collection of $1.4B, Cruise was not nominated for the Golden Globes. Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for the Best Drama and Best Song categories. An insider alleges that the Mission: Impossible star took the snub very seriously.
An insider reports to Radar Online that the Top Gun star expected to walk away with a Golden Globe for his performance in Top Gun: Maverick. He was so sure of his performance that he had begun perfecting his script. Tom Cruise’s utter shock and surprise his name did not even make it to the nominees. The nominations were announced on 12th December 2022 for the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony. Insider reports,
This certainly comes as a shock since Tom Cruise boycotted the same awards in 2021. He returned the awards in context to accusations against Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The non-profit organization was accused of lacking diversity in its nominations. This created an uproar of criticism from the people and other institutions, and ultimately HFPA had to undergo major restructuring to mitigate said harms.
To make matters worse Tom Cruise’s arch-rival Brad Pitt received a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the film Babylon. Cruise’s rival already has a head start over him as he holds an Oscar in his kitty for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
