Over the course of seven seasons Sons of Anarchy saw the title club having two different Presidents, but as the series explored the history of SAMCRO more and more, one big question arose why was Piney never President of the club Sons of Anarchy took viewers to the fictional town of Charming California to immerse themselves into the world of motorcycle clubs. Leading Sons of Anarchy was Jackson Jax Teller Charlie Hunnam VP of the club at the beginning of the series and the son of John JT Teller one of the club’s founding members.
Sons of Anarchy kicks off when Jax finds JT smanifesto in which he shared his vision and plans for the club which were completely different from those of the current President and Jax is stepfather Clay Morrow Ron Perlman. This was the beginning of a bunch of problems between Jax and Clay both within the club and in their personal family lives with Jax eventually taking over as President of SAMCRO and getting rid of Clay for everything he did against the club and its members, including JT. However, there was another, older member in the club who in theory, should have taken over SAMCRO s Presidency but never did Piney Winston William Lucking whose health issues kept him away from the President is chair.
Piermont “Piney” Winston was one of the founding members of SAMCRO and thus one of the First 9, and he was also the father of Opie Winston (Ryan Hurst), Jax’s best friend and fellow club member. When Piney and JT returned from Vietnam, they saw the deterioration of their country and faced discrimination and economic hardship leading them to form the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club along with fellow veteran Lenny Janowitz Sonny Barger. JT took over as President of SAMCRO, with Piney as his VP and Lenny as his Sgt at Arms meaning that when JT passed away in 1993 Piney should have become President of the club but Piney stepped down as VP in 1990 due to health issues related to emphysema but he remained a patched member of the club.
