'Magnum P.I.': Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks on Being Saved by NBC, 'Lovely' Reunion on Set (Exclusive)

Modern fans may not know much about him because his career was so short, but Magnum TA managed to do some impressive work in wrestling. One of the biggest “what could have beens” in pro wrestling history is arguably Magnum TA, who debuted in the late 1970s but came into prominence in the early 1980s wrestling for Mid-South Wrestling and then what would become World Championship Wrestling. An impressive in-ring performer, Magnum was clearly being groomed to be a top star before his in-ring career was cut tragically short.

Modern fans may not know much about him because his career was so short, but Magnum TA managed to do some impressive work during those eight years, including putting one of the all-time great matches. Let’s take a look at what fans should know about Magnum TA, including the accident that put his days of competition to an end.

Born in Virginia, Terry Allen made his debut in the late 1970s, first making an impression in the NWA-affiliated Pacific Northwest Wrestling, performing in Oregon and Washington. By 1982, he went back east to wrestle for the Eddie Graham-run Championship Wrestling From Florida. During his time there, Dusty Rhodes took over for Graham as the promotion’s booker, and Allen ended up forging strong bonds with not only Rhodes, but also fellow wrestlers Barry Windham and Blackjack Mulligan.

For the first five years of his career, the man best known as Magnum TA wrestled under his real name, Terry Allen. However, that changed once he arrived in Mid-South Wrestling in 1983. Due to the size of his car, Allen was tasked with driving around the massive Andre the Giant, and the two hit it off. Andre noticed that his little rookie friend looked a bit like Tom Selleck, who starred in Magnum, P.I., and urged Terry Allen to change his name to Magnum TA, using his real-life initials in the place of “P.I.”
