Buffy's Canon Ending Includes a Romance '90s Fans Won't Believe

Two overlooked members of the Scooby Gang have one of the most unlikely and for some most hated romances in Buffy the Vampire Slayer history.

Every Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan has their favorite and least favorite romantic pairings from the franchise but one couple from the comics is truly baffling. During its tenure on television and its continuation into comic books Buffy has been a franchise that reflects several genres into one body of work. Horror drama  and even a bit of sci  but one aspect that has always truly gripped fans is the romance. Whether it be everyones favorite Wiccan couple Tara and Willow, or the respective will they would not they tension that Buffy shares with Angel and Spike, audiences were always compelled by the romantic pairings that the franchise offered.

Still more than any other romance in the show or its spinoffs one that would definitely surprise and perplex the average viewer is the one between Xander Harris and Dawn Summers. Xander oftentimes grew as a character on the show by means of his romantic entanglements. He most notably had relationships with Cordelia Chase and Anya Jenkins  but a romance between himself and Dawn was never even hinted at during the show. At    she mentions that she used to have a crush on Xander growing up in Season 5s  Real Me  but because he viewed her as a little sister Xander never reciprocated it.

Xander and Dawns relationship takes a dramatic shift during Joss Whedons comic book continuation of the show made in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics. The bond slowly  gradually continues to grow until they share their first onpanel kiss in Jane Espenson and Georges Jeantys Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight 28 or  Retreat Part Three. By the time the canonical Twelfth and final season comes to a close the two get married and have a daughter named Joyce in honor of Dawn and Buffys late mother.
