The Punisher's Most Brutal Kill Is Also His Saddest One

After years spent sending criminals to their graves, the Punisher's most brutal kill involves none other than his own children, courtesy of the Hand.

Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, has delivered some of the most gruesome kills ever seen in the Marvel Universe, but fans could never guess who the victims of his most brutal and tragic act of violence would be. After years spent sending criminals to their graves, the Punisher's worst kill involves none other than his own children.

Frank Castle's two children, Lisa and Frank Jr., were killed by mobsters in Central Park after accidentally witnessing a crime along with their mother Maria. Traditionally, this tragedy turned the ex-Marine Frank into the Punisher, a vigilante who uses his military training and his relentless desire for vengeance to hunt down and kill criminals. In recent stories, the cult of assassins called the Hand has chosen the Punisher as their "High Slayer," a "saint of killers" who will guide them towards unprecedented slaughter.

To ensure Frank's loyalty, the Hand used its forbidden magic to resurrect Maria. Until now it has seemed that they kept Lisa and Frank Jr. dead as a bargaining chip to use with the Punisher, but the truth is way more tragic. In Punisher #6, by Jason Aaron, Jesùs Saiz, and Paul Azaceta, Frank barely survives his battle against the God of War, Ares. After recovering from his injuries, he asks the High Priestess of the Hand to check on his children, revealing two empty coffins. It is thus revealed that the Hand has actually been trying to resurrect Lisa and Frank Jr., but their rituals and potions do not work well with children, especially those who have been dead longer than they were alive. Every time they try, the children come back as hideous, suffering monstrosities. After witnessing yet another failed attempt, the Punisher decides that this will be the last time, and puts the deformed creatures that were once his children out of their misery with his own hands.
