That Time When A Fan Attacked Randy Orton During A WWE Event In South Africa

In 2013, a bizarre incident saw Randy Orton attacked by a fan in the ring while WWE was touring South Africa.

In the territorial days of professional wrestling, kayfabe was alive, fans were super passionate, and even rioting occurred every now and then. You had to send the crowd home happy or else the heel and his associates were in trouble. The show then evolved, and with the advent of sports entertainment and the burial of kayfabe, these incidents became a thing of distant past. That is, until Randy Orton was attacked by a fan in one of the most bizarre incidents in modern pro wrestling.

In 2013, WWE was touring South Africa and Randy Orton was featured as a top attraction. That night, Orton was facing Big E. After he won the match, he climbed the top rope to strike his signature pose. While he was basking in the cheers of the hyped-up crowd, a fan jumped the barricade, entered the ring and struck Orton. The guy actually hit him with a low blow when Orton was on the top rope, and Orton collapsed to the ground. Initially, Orton looked like he was selling but once he took a look back and saw that his attacker was an unknown guy from the crowd, he got up and looked ready to beat him down.

Security then rushed into the ring and dragged the fan out, but Orton got his revenge, as he sneaked in a quick kick to the head when the fan was pulled out of the ring. As a parting gift, Orton flipped him off as he was taken out of the arena. Some fans in the crowd thought the whole thing was a work but WWE later confirmed that the incident was not part of the programming.
