Record-breaking opening weekend for Fifty Shades of Grey film

 The erotic dramas Valentines Day opening weekend set records in 11 countries and a new high for Universal Studios in the UK. 





The Fifty Shades of Grey film has audiences strapped to their seats around the world as it broke opening weekend records in 11 different markets according to Box Office Mojo. The film which was released for Valentines Day weekend took a gross $158m from 58 different markets plus $81.7m from US cinemas  breaking records in Italy where it took $9.1m, Argentina and Poland.The films distributor Universal Studios saw its highest ever opening weekend take in the UK  $21.1m as well as in France Russia and Brazil.


The US gross makes it the second biggest February opening ever coming narrowly behind Mel Gibsons controversial Passion of the Christ. The film directed by Samuel Taylor Johnson is based on the hugely successful novel by EL James and depicts a sadomasochistic relationship between virgin student Anastasia Steele and rich businessman Christian Grey. The use of bondage and sadomasochism  BDSM in the movie has the sex-toy industry hoping for a spike in sales.


According to the New York Times the book was part of the spur behind a 7.5% jump in 2013 in the sales of sex related products a category which includes toys videos and books. we have a small favour to ask.
