In the second part of the crime series based on the novels by Lee Child ex MP Reacher Cruise uncovers a conspiracy within the US Army a former general Robert Knepper who now runs a private security company appears to have falsely accused officers of involved in the illegal arms trade.
At the same time Reacher is threatened with a paternity suit: Sixteen years ago he is said to have gotten a waitress pregnant and then fled. With supposed daughter Samantha Danika Yarosh Heroes Reborn and MP Susan Turner Cobie Smulders in tow Reacher sets out to shed light on both cases.
To put it bluntly No Way Back is essentially a family film a loner moves between his former family (Military) and his potential new family Samantha. Its all packaged as no frills not over the top action with a stringent exciting story and as usual Tom Cruise acting with the utmost precision.
Like part one the style is based on old hand made crime and political thrillers from the 1970s. Director Edward Zwick Blood Diamond explained in an interview that he wanted to avoid CGI effects that the action should come across as palpable and real and that he had classics like French Connection and The Three Days of the Condor in mind as role models must have had.
