Picard's Seven & Riker Link Gives Season 3 A New Exciting Dynamic

Seven of Nine is the new commander of the USS Titan in Picard season 3, but how will this go down with the ship's former captain William T Riker?

Star Trek: Picard has revealed an exciting link between Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) that will give season 3 a fascinating new dynamic. The new trailer screened as part of Star Trek Day 2022 gave audiences the first hint of what brings the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew back together. However, with this reunion comes the possibility of tension, hinting at a fascinating dynamic for Picard season 3.

Answering a distress call from Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Captain Will Riker find themselves in need of a Starfleet vessel. The ship in question is the USS TItan, which Riker captained after he left the Enterprise in the TNG crew's final Star Trek movie. Riker has been seen aboard the Titan in episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks but had left the ship behind by the time of Picard season 1. Now, Riker returns to his former ship in Picard season 3, to find Seven of Nine in command of the Titan, aiding the two TNG veterans in their mission to find Dr. Crusher.

Having Seven as commander of the Titan adds an exciting new dynamic to Star Trek: Picard season 3. In previous episodes of TNG, Riker has often appeared to be put out by the fact he wasn't promoted to Captain of the Enterprise in the absence of Jean-Luc. This led to friction between Riker and the controversial TNG captain, Edward Jellico in TNG season 6, episodes 10 and 11, "Chain of Command". In the Picard season 3 trailer, Seven is in the center seat of the Titan, rather than Jean-Luc or Will. The possibility of similar friction and bruised pride informing Riker's interactions with Seven could give a fresh new dynamic to Picard season 3, one that will aid the larger story of Seven's role within Starfleet.
