Grey's Anatomy: Private Practice affects medical drama 15 years later

 Amelia Shepherd made her debut in the spin  series  but remains active and feeling the effects of her personal trauma on the main attraction.






The longest running medical series on American TV  Greys Anatomy is set to premiere its 19th season on the 6th. In a reinvention phase with protagonist Ellen Pompeo appearing less and a new class of residents arriving with new stories the drama has one of its main pillars in a character that  curiously was born in another attraction .


It is the neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd   played by Caterina Scorsone. Although her older brother the late Derek Shepherd  Patrick Dempsey was one of the protagonists of Greys Anatomy during the initial 11 seasons Amelia first appeared in Private Practice  2007-2013  a spin off series focused on Addison Montgomery . Kate Walsh. The spin-off debuted exactly 15 years ago  on September 26  2007.


Private Practice was born during the third season of Greys Anatomy when the medical drama was already one of the most popular on TV. The pup series in addition to generating more money and visibility for the ABC network and for the producers helped solve a hot potato planted by Shonda Rhimes Addison who was supposed to be Meredith Grays  Ellen Pompe  rival for Dereks heart.  won the publics favor. How could the redhead compete with the girl in the story without losing the affection of the crowd?


The solution found? Addison did not compete. In the final stretch of the third year she traveled to Los Angeles to reconnect with college friends looking for help with a personal problem the desire to be a mother. She ended the visit by agreeing to work at the private clinic they ran quitting her job at Seattle Grace Hospital  now Gray Sloan Memorial.
