I have had a lot of Snape. And a lot of Neil Oliver. And today a child told me I looked like Dora the Explorer.
I am in this dance theatre piece called Burn at the Edinburgh Festival. Its a piece I have created with Steven Hoggett and I am playing Robert Burns. So I got these black extensions for that. Its nuts. Its about a group of people looking back at this person who was a peer of theirs at high school who was not a peer at all.He was much much older. And he had very bizarrely decided to come back to the high school that he actually graduated from, to graduate again in order to get his exams to get into medical school.
Its a story that sort of rocked Scotland and Glasgow at the time. We think we are pretty canny people and heres this guy who right under everyone noses nearly completely pulled off such an act of foolish bravado. This film retells the story in all its weirdness.I think I am a pretty good liar. And I’m sure my acting skills help sometimes. But I do not think they are necessarily related.
I mean this guy Brian Mackinnon, who went back to school under the name of Brandon Lee is not an actor as you see by his performance in the school musical! You can’t imagine that people would all have been so gullible as to fall for it. Particularly his insane backstory about why he had to come back to school because his Canadian opera singer mother died in a car crash and his father was a diplomat I mean he did not go for a kind of average backstory.
And all the teachers that he had were the same ones who would taught him the first time around. I mean the kids all thought he looked much older initially they called him 30 something but they just accepted it.Did you go to your own high school reunion? No I have only done that on film for Romy And Micheles High School Reunion in the 90s.
I think the whole notion of high school reunions and proms is a relatively new thing in Scotland. Or maybe they have happened in my high school and they have just not invited me. I do not know. I am just waiting. But theres a lot of talk about it and yes I would love to. I have worked with Lisa Kudrow a few times and she has said that the stumbling block is theres a misogynist view in Hollywood that two middle aged women can not carry a film. But things are changing.
I think its a no brainer. It has such a huge fanbase. Its so funny. People on Instagram send me videos where they completely reenact our dance from that film at their wedding. Some people even ask me if I will come to their wedding and perform it with them. And I just want to say here no I am not going to do that. When my agent tells me I have been asked to do these things what I find hilarious is that I never know who these celebrities are And I do not think thats a good sign.
I have been asked to do Strictly a few times. And various other ones. And I get why I am kind of famous and Iam also fun and personable and chatty but no. Its just not my thing. But I have just hosted the American version of a new sort of psychological reality gameshow called The Traitors. I play this sort of a camp character of myself swathed in tartan going Welcome to my castle. Claudia Winkleman does the British version but I am not sure she plays it so camp as me.
